From soft rewards to long-lasting chews

There is a beef chew for almost every dog. The softest are beef strips, cubes and sticks together with beef lung cubes – light, easy to portion and useful for training. Medium-hard options include the beef ear (also with hair), beef trachea in 7 and 30cm, beef tendon, rumen and beef snouts. The longest-lasting chews are beef pizzles in lengths from 12 to 90cm, beef horns and hooves, the beef foot bone and the beef kneecap. The range is rounded off with liver, udder, testicles, larynx, round and flat gullet, beef tail and the BEEFTA tail.

Matching the chew to the dog

Puppies and seniors – strips, cubes, sticks and lung; avoid hard bones and horns.
Small breeds – smaller, medium-hard pieces such as 7cm trachea or a beef ear.
Large breeds – long pizzles, hooves and horns.

Very hard horns and hooves can be too much for power chewers and for older dogs with weaker teeth. Beef is a classic protein, so for dogs with food allergies or for rotation it is worth looking at horse or game.
